Why This Indicator Matters

Research shows that implicit bias and teachers' race contribute to racial disparities in school discipline data (see, for example, Ohio Discipline Data: An Analysis of Ability and Race and Teacher Race and School Discipline).

In addition, approaches to school discipline vary widely from district to district (and often within districts) and across time. For example, a district may have almost no suspensions due to other program offerings.
