This indicator reports the number of single-parent families (consisting of a householder with no spouse present and one or more children under age 18 by birth, marriage, or adoption) and the percentage of single-parent families among all families with children under 18 by birth, marriage, or adoption. It also reports the number and percentage of female and male headed single-parent families.[i]
[i] The definition of “family” provided by the U.S. Census Bureau for these data is “a householder and one or more other people related to the householder by birth, marriage, or adoption. Same-sex couples are included in the families category if there is at least one additional person related to the householder by birth or adoption. Responses of ‘same-sex spouse’ were edited during processing to ‘unmarried partner.’” Because the data on single-parent families do not indicate the presence of non-spousal adults living in the family, it is possible that some single-parent families reported here included unmarried partners.
