Definitions: Number and rate per 1,000 children ages 0-17 who were placed into care outside of their home due to abuse or neglect.

Data Source: Kentucky Cabinet for Health and Family Services, Department for Community Based Services, processed by the Kentucky State Data Center. Child population data for rate calculation from the U.S. Census Bureau, 2010 Decennial Census, processed by the Kentucky State Data Center.

Footnotes: LNE= Rate not calculated for fewer than 6 events during a given year. Foster care includes placements in state-run child care facilities, private child care facilities/homes and licensed foster care with relatives. The child's residential address before being placed in foster care was used in the data set. Data sample was limited to the ability to geocode data at the desired level of geography, therefore children without a specified address, or without an address that could be geocoded were excluded. The numerator for the rate calculation is the average of the 2010, 2011, and 2012 data.
