Why This Indicator Matters

All students need to attend school regularly in order to learn and develop the skills they need to become successful adults. A growing body of research suggests that absenteeism is linked to lower academic achievement and serves as an early warning sign for dropping out of school.

Data Provided By

Definitions: Chronic absenteeism is the number and percent of students that missed 10 percent or more days in a school year.

Data Source: Kentucky Department of Education.

Footnotes: LNE= Rates were not calculated for fewer than 6 students.
**= School district merged with county district.
Notes: Count includes both excused and unexcused absences, but excludes exempt absences and tardies. The denominator used to calculate the rate is average daily membership (ADM). Preschool students are not included.
