What the data shows
The number of children with MaineCare in the years 2010-2019 was at its highest in 2012 and has declined each year since. There were 26,061 fewer children with MaineCare comparing June 2019 with June 2012. For children under age 6, 48.4% were covered by MaineCare, in 2019, the first time it has gone below 50% .This is compared to the highest year of coverage, 58.1% in 2012. For youth ages 6 -18, the 2018 rate of participation was 42.0% in 2019 compared to 45.7% in 2012.
For 2019 for all children 18 & under by county, the percent of children with MaineCare varied between a high of 63.5% in Washington County and 58.6% in Piscataquis County and a low of 30.7% in Cumberland County, 34.1% in York County and 34.4% in Sagadahoc County.
Definitions: The number and percent of individual children ages 0-5 and 6-18 participating in MaineCare in state fiscal year July 1 – June 30. These data are reported by age group and by the child’s county of residence at the end of the SFY or the end of the child's participation in MaineCare.. The numerator is the number of children with MaineCare at any point in the year and the denominator is the number of children in Maine in the various age groups.
