Definitions: Temporary Assistance for Needy Families (TANF) average monthly number of cases by fiscal year. TANF helps pregnant women and families with one or more dependent children with temporary cash and other benefits. TANF can help pay for food, shelter, utilities, and expenses other than medical. In Illinois, the maximum monthly cash benefit for a family of three is $432, which is equivalent to less than 30% of the federal poverty level.
