Why This Indicator Matters
The composition of families in America is constantly changing and, as a result, the type of primary caregiver in children's lives varies widely. Families may be headed by biological parents, step-parents, foster parents or other relatives. The number of caregivers in a household also varies widely and increasingly, single parents have become primary caregivers in many families. Single parenting comes with unique challenges and research indicates that children growing up in single parent households face an increased risk for cognitive, financial, social and emotional concerns.
