Child population, ages 0-4, by race and ethnicity in New Mexico

Definitions: The number and percentage of children under the age of 5 by race and ethnicity in New Mexico, statewide and by county.
Percentage is calculated by dividing the number of children under the age of 5 for each race and ethnicity by the total number of children under the age of 5.

The U.S. Census uses these race categories: White, Black or African American, American Indian/Alaska Native, Asian, Native Hawaiian/Other Pacific Islander, Some Other Race, and Two or More Races. In addition, the U.S. Census uses two ethnic categories: Hispanic and Non-Hispanic. Hispanic (or Latino) refers to a person of Cuban, Mexican, Puerto Rican, South or Central American, or other Spanish culture or origin, regardless of race. The term 'origin' is used to indicate a person's (or the person's parents) heritage, nationality group, lineage, or country of birth. People who identify their origin as Spanish or Hispanic may be of any race.

The number of children under the age of 5 for each race and ethnicity is derived from Tables B01001B,  B01001C,  B01001D, B01001E, B01001F, B01001G,  B01001H, B01001I; the total number of children under the age of 5 for New Mexico and by county is derived from Table B01001.

Footnotes: Some people in each race listed may identify also as Hispanic. Thus, the sum of the percentages is greater than 100%.

1-year data for the Native Hawaiian population is not available (NA) because the number of sample cases is too small.

New Mexico state-level data typically are from the American Community Survey 1-year estimates. As a result of COVID-19 data collection challenges, the 2020 New Mexico state-level data are 5-year estimates and not comparable to other years. 2020 data for NM counties are still comparable to other years.
