Why This Indicator Matters

The Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) provides important nutritional support for low-wage working families, low-income seniors, and people with disabilities living on fixed incomes. Close to 70% of SNAP participants are in families with children; nearly a third are in households with seniors or people with disabilities. Data Provided By

Definitions: Number of individuals participating in FoodShare, known as SNAP (Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program) at the federal level, and also called food stamps. Data are calendar year monthly averages from the Wisconsin Department of Health Services.

These data may have been influenced by the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic, starting in 2020. Starting in 2021, state data reflects an unduplicated count of recipients. Recipients that move within the month to another county may be counted in both counties or Tribes for that month, but will only be counted once for state totals. This means that the sum of all counties may be higher than the unduplicated state totals.
