High infant and child mortality rates are deeply concerning and can point to gaps in public policy or underlying problems such as poor access to prenatal care and health care services, violence or injury.

Definitions: Infant mortality includes the number of deaths of children under 1 year of age.

Child mortality includes the number of deaths from all causes, children ages 1 to 19.
