Why This Indicator Matters
Definitions: The number of children ages 5-17 who live below the poverty threshold. The percent is based on the population ages 5-17 for whom poverty status was determined by small area income and poverty estimates (SAIPE).
Data Source:
For counties - U. S. Census Bureau and Small Area Income and Poverty Estimates (SAIPE) web site.
For cities - 1-year American Community Survey Table B17001.
Footnotes:
For 2005, SAIPE switched from the Community Population Survey to the American Community Survey. Results are not comparable with prior years.
For 2020 city-level data, the U.S. Census Bureau did not release its standard 1-year estimates from the 2020 American Community Survey (ACS) because of the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on data collection. Therefore, these data are unable to be updated.
