Why This Indicator Matters

Teen moms often struggle to complete high school, live in poverty, and raise a child alone, making it more difficult for them to create good early learning environments to ensure their children are ready and prepared for school. Babies born to teen mothers are more likely to be born too early and/or too small.

Data Provided By

Definitions: The number of births to mothers ages 15-19, and the rate per 1,000 females ages 15-19. An * indicates the three-year count is fewer than 6, so no rate is listed.

Data Source: Michigan Department of Health and Human Services, Division for Vital Records and Health Statistics.

Footnotes: These data are based on three-year averages, with the latest year listed. Rates are not calculated for counties with occurrences that total less than six over the three-year period. NA represents the uncalculated rates.
