Data Provided By

Definitions: Child protection investigations (by finding) conducted during the state fiscal year (July 1-June 30).

Data Source: Louisiana Department of Children and Family Services, by special request

Footnotes: The child protection investigation process begins with a report of child abuse and/or neglect. Reports are then screened to determine whether or not the allegations meet the definition of child abuse and/or neglect. Investigations are then conducted for screened-in reports of child abuse and neglect. Data reported here reflect the outcomes of these investigations according to three possible outcomes: valid, invalid, and other.

Child protection investigations for some parishes are included in the data of another parish. During the 2005-2007 time period, the offices listed below served multiple parishes as follows:

Calcasieu - served Calcasieu and Cameron parishes
Catahoula - served Catahoula and La Salle parishes
East Feliciana - served East Feliciana and West Feliciana
Iberville - served Iberville and West Baton Rouge parishes
Lafourche - served Assumption and Lafourche parishes
Natchitoches - served Natchitoches and Red River parishes
Ouachita - served Caldwell and Ouachita parishes
St. John the Baptist - served St. Charles, St. James and St. John the Baptist parishes
Tangipahoa - served St. Helena and Tangipahoa
Webster - served Bienville, Claiborne, Jackson and Webster parishes

LNE (Low Number Event) is a value of fewer than 5 events and thus is not reported as a numerical value.

Note that totals from parishes do not add up to the Louisiana totals because a small number of cases are handled directly by the state office.
