Why This Indicator Matters

Graduating college with a degree will help people gain access to higher paying jobs and a person with a credential is less likely to be unemployed. Maine businesses need an educated work force to hire qualified employees. Having a degree is more important than it was thirty years ago in Maine, because of the loss of manufacturing jobs and other employment in industries such as logging.

Maine has a college graduation rate on par with the national average, as both were at 61% in 2020.
National Student Clearinghouse  However, Vermont leads the nation with a college graduation rate of 74%. For the latest year, 2020, Maine graduated 67 percent of students enrolled in 4-yr colleges and 37 percent of those enrolled in two-year colleges within a six year period following high school graduation. (2020 looks at the outcomes of the high school class of 2014.)

In terms of trends, 2020 was the first year that Maine graduated over 60% of students, as the rates were between 56.5% - 59.0% in the years 2016-2019.The latest year was also the highest year for graduates of two-year colleges. However, due to the state's demographic of having fewer children, 2016 had the most college graduates at 5,573 compared to 5,293 for 2020, or a decline of 280 graduates or 5%.

Definitions: This measure shows the number and percent of Maine young adults who graduate from public and private institutions within 6 years of high school graduation with either a two-year or a four-year degree.

Data Source: National Student Clearinghouse Report run annually for the Maine Department of Education and posted to their Data Warehouse .

Footnotes: Year refers to year graduating from college, not year graduating from high school.
It includes students who graduate from high school during the year 6 years prior to see if they have subsequently graduated from a four-year college, or a two-year college.
