Definitions: Percent of all children ages 0 to 13 that can be served by the licensed child care capacity. Percent is calculated as: child care capacity/population ages 0 to 13.

Only licensed facilities are included in the percentage. Licensed school age programs are included, which is why the age ranges 0-13.

Not all children ages 0-13 will need child care, so this percentage is not expected to be 100%. However, this measure provides context for how many children ages 0 to 13 could be served by the licensed capacity.

Data Source: Child care data (numerator): North Dakota Department of Human Services
Population ages 0-13 (denominator): U.S. Census populations with bridged race categories from the National Center for Health Statistics.

Footnotes: UPDATED - March 2021 (Note: Data for 2021 is not reliably available due to a switch in data systems at the Department of Human Services)
DATE - Child care capacity data matches data for Feb. 1 of reference year. Population estimates are for the vintage year two years prior. Example: 2020 data matches Feb. 2020 child care capacity and population estimates from 2018.
