Why This Indicator Matters
Students were asked if in the past year, they had gambled at a casino, played the lottery or scratch-off tickets, bet on team sports, played cards for money, bet money on horse races, played bingo for money, bet on dice games such as craps, gambled on the internet, bet on games of personal skill such as poot, darts or basketball, and/or bet on video games. In 2016: played fantasy sports for money was added to gambling. In 2018: removed horse race betting from gambling.
Students who report gambling tend to report higher rates of substance use than students who do not. In 2018, out of those students who reported gambling, 12% also reported smoking cigarettes in the past year. This is compared to 6% of students who report smoking in the past year out of those that do not gamble.
