Why This Indicator Matters

Low birth weight is the percentage of infants born weighing less than 2,500 grams (about 5.5 pounds). A baby's birth weight is a key indicator of newborn health. It is directly related to infant survival and healthy development.

Data Provided By

Definitions: The percent of live births that were low birthweight (less than 2,500 grams or 5 pounds, 8 ounces at birth), by mother's county of residence. Data are summed over the five year period.

Births that had an unknown county are only included at the state level.
