Why This Indicator Matters

Maine is one of two states where deaths outnumber births. Though in-migration has offset this loss in population, the declining number of births have implications for Maine cities and towns and schools and economy.

What the data shows
Between 2017 and 2018, the number of births statewide increased by 119, with York County alone increasing by 138 births, Seven other counties had small increases (1-38 more births), while  8 counties saw declines, with Penobscot (-49) and Lincoln (-33) with the largest declines. Comparing 2018 to 2008, only Lincoln County had more births in 2018 than in 2008.  Statewide, there were 1,424 less births in 2008 than in 2018.
