Why This Indicator Matters

Maine is one of four states where deaths outnumber births. Though in-migration has offset this loss in population, the declining number of births have implications for Maine cities and towns and schools and economy.

What the data shows
Maine continues to have a generally downward trend in the number of births since 1990.

Between 2018 and 2019, the number of births statewide decreased by 530, with only Oxford and Sagadahoc having more births in 2019 than in 2018., By contrast, Penobscot had 133 fewer births and Androscoggin had 74 fewer births in 2019 than 2018.
