Why This Indicator Matters

Maine is one of two states where births outnumber deaths. Though in-migration has offset this loss in population, the declining number of births have implications for Maine cities and towns and schools and economy.

What the data shows
Comparing 2017 to 2008, only Lincoln County had more births in 2017 than in 2008. York County had the largest difference between 2008 and 2017, with 286 fewer babies born in the most recent year.
