College starting within 12 months of graduating high school in Maine

Change Indicator

Why This Indicator Matters

Students who gain a credential of an associates degree or a bachelor's degree have a higher likelihood of maintaining employment at a wage that will allow them to meet their economic needs.  Students who begin college immediately after high school graduation or within one year are more likely to graduate than those who start college later.

What the data shows
Between 2009 -2019 the overall percent of high school students who enrolled in either a two-year college or a four-year college within one year of graduation was very stable- between 63-67%. For students graduating high school since the pandemic in June 2020 and June 2021, there was a marked decline. Just 59% of 2020 high school graduates enrolled in college. The 2020 4-year college enrollment was 45% compared to 47-49% for the years 2009-2019, and 14% for 2-year colleges in 2020, down from 15-17% for 2009-2019. The 7,349 students who enrolled within 12 months after graduating high school in June 2020 was a drop of 819 students from the previous year, or 10%.

For the latest year, 2021, the data is preliminary and does not include those who enrolled from January 2022-June 2022. Based on incomplete data, just 6,595 students enrolled by March 2022.
