Definitions: The number and percentage of children age under age 18 who are living in families with income below the federal poverty level.

Data Source: United States Census 2000, U.S. Department of Commerce, Census Bureau, SF3, Tables P87 and P159A,B,H. For 2001 and later: United States Census Bureau, Small Area Income & Poverty Estimates (SAIPE).

Footnotes: Poverty is determined based on income received during the prior year. Poverty thresholds differ by family size and are updated annually for inflation using the Consumer Price Index.
