Why This Indicator Matters

It is important to understand the ages of children represented in foster care to dissect which populations are being most impacted. In 2018, one-third of the foster care population were transition age youth who are 13-21 years old.

Definitions: The unduplicated total number of children in foster care placement at any time during the reporting period.  Age represents the child’s age at the end of the period if the child was in placement at the end of the period.  If the child left foster care during the year, then his or her age is captured at the discharge date.

Footnotes: Statistics (rates, ratios, percents) are not calculated and displayed for counts less than 10 (or less than 3 for Bayesian/Nearest Neighbor rates). This is due to the unreliability of statistics based on small numbers of events.
