DEFINITIONS & SOURCES

COLLAPSE

Definitions: The number and percent of all children (ages 0-17) living in families headed by a parent without a spouse present in the home. For 1990 and 2000, the data is from the decennial census. For 2005-2009, 2006-2010, and 2007-2011, the data represent five-year averages from the American Community Survey.

Data Source: Family demographics data for all counties is only collected in the decennial census (i.e., 1990 & 2000). Intermediary years can be obtained from the U.S. Census Bureau's American Community Survey only for Texas and some large counties.
