DEFINITIONS & SOURCES

COLLAPSE

Definitions: Percent of babies weighing less than 5.5 lbs. (or 2,500 grams) at birth averaged over five years of data.

Data Source: 1991-U.S. Bureau of the Census; Alaska Bureau of Vital Statistics. 1993 & 1994-Alaska Department of Labor; Alaska Bureau of Vital Statistics. 1995, 1997, and on-Alaska Bureau of Vital Statistics.

Footnotes: Five years of data were combined to minimize the unreliability of measurement due to the small number of actual events. The reported values  are a rolling average across five years.  For example, we report the average value across the years 2002, 2003, 2004, 2005, and 2006.
