County Level Data:
Per capita personal income is calculated by the Bureau of Economic Analysis. This income measure is the total personal income of the residents in the state (or county) divided by the resident population in the state (or county). Per capita personal income is often used as an indicator of the quality of consumer markets and of the economic well-being of the residents in the state (or county). Personal income is the income received by persons from all sources included in the Bureau of Economic Analysis personal income measure.

School District Data: Per capita personal income is calculated by dividing the total personal income of the residents of the school district by the total number of residents in the school district.  Only available for year 2000.

Data Source: County Level Data:  Bureau of Economic Analysis, U.S. Department of Commerce. Retrieved from http://www.bea.gov/itable/

School District Data:  Analysis by Indiana Business Research Center.

Footnotes: In November of 2015, BEA released revised per capita estimates back to 1995.  These numbers were updated accordingly in the Data Center.  For more info, please visit their website here.

Note that 1996 data is not available at the county level due to early collection of the data which skipped every other year.  Also of note, there is a break in the SAIPE time-series between 2004 and 2005 due to the switch from CPS ASEC to ACS data in SAIPE modeling. Comparisons across these particular years are not advised because of this break in series.  Please see the Small Area and Income Poverty Estimates website for more information: http://www.census.gov/did/www/saipe/methods/cautions.html

This is the first publication of this method for calculating graduation rates. For more information, please visit www.doe.state.in.us/htmls/gradrate.html#1

Definitions: The percentage of women who reported they had smoked during pregnancy. Due to a change in data collection in 2007, cross-time comparison between the two "series" of data is discouraged.

Data Source: The Indiana State Department of Health, Epidemiology Resource Center, Data Analysis Team.

Original natality reports available at http://www.in.gov/isdh/19095.htm

Footnotes: Cross-time comparison of this indicator between the two time series is discouraged. Indiana used the "1989 Standard Birth Certificate" from 1990 to 2006. Indiana started using the “2003” Revised Birth Certificate on January. 1, 2007.

Before 2007, the question asked "Did mother smoke during pregnancy?"  Depending on the response, the facility would check one of the following boxes: Yes, No, or Unknown.

Beginning in 2007, more detailed information was collected such as: the average number of cigarettes/or packs that were smoked during the three months prior to becoming pregnant, the first three months of pregnancy, the second three months of pregnancy, and the last trimester of pregnancy.  If the mother smoked at any time during her pregnancy, she was considered to be a smoker for this indicator.

Footnotes: Cross-time comparison of this indicator between the two series is discouraged. Indiana used the "1989 Standard Birth Certificate" from 1990 to 2006. Indiana started using the “2003” Revised Birth Certificate on January 1, 2007.

Before 2007, the prenatal care question asked for the month of pregnancy in which prenatal care began.

Beginning in 2007, the question now asks for the date of last normal menses and the date of the first prenatal visit.  The month prenatal care began is then calculated from these two variables.

If the day of the month was unknown, the day of the month was calculated using a program that the National Center for Health Statistics (NCHS) has developed. NCHS has observed a decrease in the percent of mothers receiving care in the first month for all states who have adopted the revised certificate and considers it to be the result of better reporting.

Definitions:

There are two main categories of child maltreatment: abuse and neglect.  Further distinctions within the category of abuse are sexual abuse and physical abuse.  When referencing Indiana's data, it is important to note that a child is counted in only one category per investigation using the federal hierarchy of sexual abuse first, then physical abuse, and then neglect.

NEGLECT: The number of cases that following investigation by Child Protection Services were determined to be substantiated child neglect.  Percentage of cases substantiated are those neglect cases, out of total investigated, that are considered substantiated child neglect.

SEXUAL ABUSE:  The number of cases that following investigation by Child Protection Services were determined to be substantiated sexual child abuse.  The percent substantiated is the total number of substantiated cases divided by the total number of investigations.

PHYSICAL ABUSE: The number of cases that following investigation by Child Protective Services  were determined to be substantiated physical child abuse.  The percentage of abuse are the number of substantiated physical abuse cases divided by the total number of physical abuse cases investigated.
