Definitions: The total number of children under the age of 18.

Definitions: Children who screened positive for lead poisoning (blood lead level =10 mcg/dL) are counted if they screened positive with an unconfirmed capillary test at any time in their lives prior to the end of December.

Definitions: The number of births to teen girls ages 15 to 17 per 1,000 teen girls.

Footnotes: Starting with data for 2011, rates are based on the Census 2010 population. Previous years are based on the Census 2000 population. This change should be noted when looking at trends over time. For data reported for 1998 through 2010, the denominator is the number of girls ages 15 to 17 as reported by Census 2000. The denominator for previous years is the number of girls ages 15 to 17 according to the 1990 Census. The year indicated is the mid-year of a five-year period of data. Data are reported by the mother's place of residence, not the place of the infant's birth.

Definitions: The number of unduplicated child victims of abuse and neglect per 1,000 children under age 18.

Footnotes: Beginning in 2008, the denominator is the number of children under age 18 according to the U.S. Census. In 2008, Rhode Island lowered the eligibility age for entry into DCYF services to children and youth under age 18, although some youth may remain eligible for services after their 18th birthdays.

Child victims are an unduplicated count of child abuse and neglect victims for which credible evidence exists that child abuse and/or neglect occurred. Child abuse includes physical, sexual and emotional abuse. Neglect includes emotional, educational and medical neglect.

Definitions: Fourth grade reading scores is the percentage of fourth-grade students who scored at or above the proficiency level for reading on the New England Common Assessment Program (NECAP) test.

Data Source: The Rhode Island Department of Elementary and Secondary Education, New England Common Assessment Program (NECAP).

Footnotes: Only students who actually took the NECAP test are counted in a district's proficiency rate. The NECAP test is given in October of each school year.

Definitions:

High school graduation rate is the percentage of students who graduate from high school within four years of entering. It is calculated by dividing the number of students who graduate in four years or fewer by the total number of students in the cohort (the cohort is calculated as the number of first-time entering 9^th graders in adjusted for transfers in and transfers out during the four years).
