Definitions: The number and percent of students dropping out of school in grades 9 through 12 for any reason, except death, before graduation or completion of a Maryland approved educational program and who are not known to enroll in another school or state-approved program during the school year. The year is defined as July through June and includes students dropping out over the summer and students dropping out of evening high school and other alternative programs. Students who re-enter school during the same year in which they dropped out of school are not counted as dropouts.

The dropout rate is computed by dividing the number of dropouts by the total number of students served in grades 9 - 12.

Definitions: The number of students who leave school, for any reason other than death, within the four year period divided by the number of students who form the adjusted cohort.
The school years are defined as the first day of the school year through the summer to the first day of the following school year. Student activity that occurs during the summer, including summer withdrawals, are included in the prior year's data.

Definitions:

The four-year adjusted cohort graduation rate is the number of students who graduate in four years with a regular high school diploma divided by the number of students who form the adjusted cohort for the graduating class. For any given cohort, students who are entering grade 9 for the first time form a cohort that is subsequently “adjusted” by adding any students who transfer into the cohort later during the next three years and subtracting any students who transfer out, emigrates to another country, or dies during that same period. This definition is defined in federal regulation 34 C.F.R. §200.19(b) (1) (i)-(iv).

The four-year adjusted cohort graduation rate strictly adheres to section 1111(b) (2) (C) (vi) of the Elementary and Secondary Education Act, which defines graduation rate as the “percentage of students who graduate from secondary school with a regular diploma in the standard number of years.”

The four-year graduation rate is calculated by dividing the number of students who graduate within four years, including the summer following their fourth year of high school, with a regular high school diploma by the number of students who form the adjusted cohort for that graduating class. Students who drop out of high school remain in the adjusted cohort—that is, the denominator of the cohort graduation rate calculation.

N/A  indicates no students or fewer than 10 students in category, or 'NA' indicates the percentage for the category is either =5 or =95 and the corresponding counts have been suppressed.

For example, a value of 15 means that there is a 15 percentage point gap between the percent of ready White students and the percent of ready Hispanic students. A positive number indicates that a higher percentage of White students than Hispanic students are fully ready for kindergarten. Larger numbers indicate a greater disparity.

Existence of a Grandparent Living with a Grandchild in the Household – This was determined by a “Yes” answer to the question, “Does this person have any of his/her own grandchildren under the age of 18 living in this house or apartment?” This question was asked of people 15 years of age and over. Because of the low numbers of persons under 30 years old living with their grandchildren, data were only tabulated for people 30 and over.
Responsibility for Basic Needs – This question determines if the grandparent is financially responsible for food, shelter, clothing, day care, etc., for any or all grandchildren living in the household. In selected tabulations, grandparent responsibility is further classified by presence of parent (of the grandchild).

Number of Grandparents Responsible for Grandchildren – Number reflects the total number of grandparents that are responsible for Basic Needs.

Percent of Grandparents Responsible for Grandchildren – Percent is calculated by dividing the total number of grandparents that are responsible for Basic Needs by Family Households with own children under 18. This gives the most accurate picture of actual households in which the grandparents are the sole bearer of responsibility for their grandchildren.

Footnotes: Limitation of the Data – Beginning in 2006, the population in group quarters (GQ) is included in the ACS. Some types of GQ populations may have grandparents as caregivers distributions that are different from the household population. The inclusion of the GQ population could therefore have a noticeable impact on the grandparents as caregivers distribution. This is particularly true for areas with a substantial GQ population.

Definitions: Infant mortality rate is the number of infants who die before their first birthday per 1,000 live births. Infant mortality rate disparity is the ratio of the Black infant mortality rate compared to the White infant mortality rate. For example, a value of 2.0 means that the Black babies are dying at twice the rate of White babies.

To minimize spikes in the data due to small sample sizes, rates were calculated using three-year rolling averages. For example, 2008-2010 includes births and infant deaths in 2008, 2009 and 2010.
