Definitions: The percentage of public school students who are approved for the Free and Reduced Price Lunch Program at the beginning of the academic year. Data are provided by the Kansas State Department of Education. The current rate represents academic year 2008-2009. The trend represents the average annual change for academic years 2004-2005 through 2008-2009.

Definitions: The estimated percentage of children under 18 years of age who live in families with incomes below 100% of the U.S. poverty threshold as defined by the U.S. Office of Management and Budget. Data are based on the U.S. Census Bureau’s Small Area Income and Poverty Estimates. The current rate represents the percentage for calendar year 2007. The trend represents the average annual percent change for calendar years 2003 through 2007.

Definitions: The two-year average percentage of children under 19 years of age without any type of health insurance during the prior calendar year and the three-year average percentage of children under age 19 with health insurance. The current rate represents the two-year average percentage of uninsured children from the Current Population Survey for years 2004-2008 (data reflect coverage for 2007 - 2008). The trend represents the average annual percent change of the two-year rolling averages for 2003-2004 through 2007-2008.

This is a valuable indicator for the state of Kansas; unfortunately data is not available at the county level for all 105 Kansas counties at this time.

Definitions: The percentage of live births to mothers who received Adequate or Adequate-Plus prenatal care, based on the Adequacy of Prenatal Care Utilization (APNCU) index. Starting in 2005, data were collected based on the 2003 revision of U.S. Standard Certificate of Live Birth, and data before 2004 were collected using the 1989 version. The revised 2003 certificate applies stricter rules in verifying prenatal care received, and therefore a lower APNCU index percentage may be expected in most counties. Data are from the Kansas Department of Health and Environment and are based on Vital Statistics. The current rate represents the annual percentage for calendar year 2007. The trend represents the average annual percent change for calendar years 2003-2007.

Definitions: The percent of public elementary schools that offer pre-kindergarten or four-year-old at-risk program in the beginning of the academic year, excluding elementary school with only special education programs. Data are provided by the Kansas Department of Education. The current rate represents academic year 2008-2009. The trend represents the average annual change for academic years 2004-2005 through 2008-2009.
