Kids Count Data Center

Definitions: Total estimated number and percentage of children ages 0 through 17 by age group.  Percentages equal that age group's representation among children under 18, not the total population of the state.

Definitions: The percentage of children younger than age 18 living in households with incomes below the federal poverty thresholds as reported by the Small Area Income and Poverty Estimates. The federal poverty threshold is calculated annually and differs according to the size and composition of the household.  Data reported for each year reflect income in the previous year.

Note that 1996 data is not available at the county level due to early collection of the data which skipped every other year.  Also of note, there is a break in the SAIPE time-series between 2004 and 2005 due to the switch from CPS ASEC to ACS data in SAIPE modeling. Definitions: FREE:  Number and percentage of public school students who received free lunches. Students from families with incomes below 130% of the poverty guidelines are eligible to enroll in the free lunch program.

REDUCED:  Number and percentage of public school students who received reduced priced lunches.

Definitions: The percentage of infants born at a birthweight of less than 2,500 grams (about 5.5 pounds).

Beginning with the 2010 Indiana Natality Report, the Indiana State Department of Health started suppressing the number and percent/rate of births and pregnancies at the county and city subgroup level when there are fewer than 5, including 0, events. This is done to protect the confidentiality of individuals.  Rates or percents based on less than 20 in the numerator are considered unstable.  These rates or percents are marked with a "U".  Please refer to the Preface of the 2010 report here: http://www.in.gov/isdh/reports/natality/2010/preface.htm

Definitions: The number and percentage of students who graduated in four years or less.  Does not include charter schools in county level aggregates due to DOE reporting (please see the source for more info).

Calculation of Indiana's graduation rate has varied over the years. As per legislative intent, the 2006-07 graduation rate (Class of 2007) that will be published in the 2007 Annual Performance Report will be the percentage of students who entered Grade 9 in fall 2003 and graduated in four years or less. Definitions: The rate of substantiated cases of child abuse and neglect per 1,000 children younger than age 18.

Definitions: The number of children younger than age 18 committed to the Indiana Department of Correction.  Total number is male and female numbers aggregated.  Committed to the Indiana Department of Correction represents only those kids who are housed in state facilities.

Definitions: The number of deaths among teens ages 15 though 19 from all causes.  Subset data is number of deaths among teens 15 - 19 due to accident, homicide, and suicide. Deaths are reported by place of residence, not place of death.
