Kids Count Data Center

Definitions: This indicator represents the number of children affected by domestic violence occurring in their homes.  Domestic violence typically refers to the use or threat of physical force against a current or former partner in an intimate relationship, resulting in fear and/or physical suffering on the part of the victim and witnessing household members.

The percentage is the proportion children impacted by domestic violence represent of the total child population ages 0 through 17 in respective geographic areas.

Footnotes: GEOGRAPHY - Data reflect place of residence and include North Dakota county-specific numbers only.  Thus, incidents impacting children living out-of-state are not included in these numbers.  NDCAWS reports a state total on their website that includes out-of-state cases in addition to cases for which the county is unidentified.  Thus, the state total reported in the Fact Book will be inconsistent with data reported directly by NDCAWS. DATE - Calendar Year (January 1 - December 31). LIMITATIONS - Data for 1999 through 2001 exclude domestic violence reports from North Dakota tribal areas. Beginning with the 2002 data, numbers from Spirit Lake reservation are included. However, data from Fort Berthold, Turtle Mountain and Standing Rock reservations are not included in this indicator. Beginning with 2010,  data are not reported for geographies where the number of children impacted by domestic violence is five or less. In these cases, "LNE" is indicated for Low Number Events. NOTE - Due to the limitations mentioned, please use caution when comparing this indicator over time.
