Definitions:
Number: Number of live births to women who received early and adequate prenatal care.
Rate: Number of live births to women who received early and adequate prenatal care per 100 live births. The Kotelchuck Index is used to measure early and adequate prenatal care (PNC):

  • Adequate plus PNC: PNC initiation begun in month 1, 2, 3, or 4 and 110 % or more expected PNC visits were received
  • Adequate PNC: PNC initiation begun in month 1, 2, 3, or 4 and 80% to 109% of expected PNC visits were received
  • Intermediate PNC: PNC initiation begun in month 1, 2, 3, or 4 and 50% to 79% of expected PNC visits were received
  • Inadequate PNC: PNC initiation begun in month 5 or late or less than 50% of expected PNC visits were received

Early and adequate PNC includes "adequate plus PNC" and "adequate PNC."
