Children living in extreme poverty represent the most at-risk children in our state, as they are exposed to several risk factors that impact their lives and development. Extreme poverty is defined as families with a total household income less than 50 percent of the federal poverty level, or about $11,000 per year for a family of four. From 2006-2008, 7 percent of Colorado children under age 18 lived in extreme poverty, slightly below the national rate of 8 percent.

 

Children living in poverty are significantly more likely to experience many of the short- and long-term negative outcomes that will impact that child’s future health, education, and overall development. Living in extreme poverty represents an added strain on these children and families, and a greater likelihood that these children will suffer the negative consequences resulting from living in poverty.
