Definitions: The percentage of children in poverty is the share of children under age 18 who live in families with incomes below the U.S. poverty threshold as defined by the U.S. Census Bureau.

Data Source: (1990) U.S. Census Bureau. Census of Population and Housing, 1990: Summary Tape File 3C, (Table P117): Prepared by the U.S. Census Bureau, Washington (WV University Office of Health Services Research), 1992. (2000 to present) For both state and county poverty estimates: U.S. Census Bureau, Small Area Income and Poverty Estimates program, data accessed online at http://www.census.gov/cgi-bin/saipe/saipe.cgi.

Footnotes: Since the 1999 Data Book, we have used information from the Small Area Income and Poverty Estimates (SAIPE) series of the U.S. Census Bureau which provides state and county-level estimates of income and poverty.

Note: Maps use the natural break classification method, which reflects patterns in the data by dividing the map into naturally occurring groups. Using statistical tools, this method determines cut-off points for each group by identifying large gaps in data values.
