Definitions: The abortion rate refers to the total number of abortions per 1,000 females of childbearing age (15-44).

Data Source:

The data used for this measure come from the Center for Health Statistics, Washington State Department of Health (DOH). Data are available online at http://www.doh.wa.gov/ehsphl/chs/chs-data/abortion/abormain.htm (Abortion and Pregnancy Data, Table 15).

S: Data estimate has been suppressed. When annual number of abortions was 10 or fewer, the rates are not shown.

Footnotes:

Data last updated in March 2012 by Washington KIDS COUNT.

Every year DOH collects data from abortion providers across the state of Washington using the abortion reporting system. DOH also collects data from Certificates of Live Birth and Certificates of Fetal Death. Information about abortions performed in other states and in Canada for women who are residents of Washington State is obtained through voluntary cooperative arrangements between vital records offices in most states and Canadian provinces.

DOH technical notes are available at http://www.doh.wa.gov/ehsphl/CHS/chs-data/TechNote/tech_not.pdf.

Note: Maps use the natural break classification method, which reflects patterns in the data by dividing the map into naturally occurring groups. Using statistical tools, this method determines cut-off points for each group by identifying large gaps in data values.
