Definitions: Number of young people under the age of 20 years who remain in state custody at the end of a given state fiscal year (the last day of June). Rate is per 1,000 population of same age.

Data Source: Counts provided by the Tennessee Department of Children's Services. The KIDS COUNT division of the Tennessee Commission on Children and Youth organized the data.

Note: Maps use the natural break classification method, which reflects patterns in the data by dividing the map into naturally occurring groups. Using statistical tools, this method determines cut-off points for each group by identifying large gaps in data values.
