Definitions:
Number:
The number of tax returns that resulted in the receipt of the federal Earned Income Tax Credit.
Percent: The number of tax returns that resulted in the receipt of the federal Earned Income Tax Credit per 100 tax returns filed.

Data Source: Agenda for Children analysis of data provided by the Brookings Institution's EITC Interactive data system.

Footnotes: Note that this indicator reflects the number of tax returns that resulted in the receipt of the EITC, not the number of households or children receiving the EITC. A single household can have multiple tax filers (such as when several unmarried adults share a house). Additionally, some households do not include any tax filers.

Data is reported by tax year.

For more EITC data, please visit Brookings' EITC Interactive Data System at http://www.brookings.edu/metro/EITC/EITC-Data.aspx.

Note: Maps use the natural break classification method, which reflects patterns in the data by dividing the map into naturally occurring groups. Using statistical tools, this method determines cut-off points for each group by identifying large gaps in data values.
