Definitions: Preterm births: babies born with a gestational age of less than 37 completed weeks. Birth certificates that did not report gestational age were not included in this tabulation. The primary measure used to determine the gestation age of the newborn is the interval between the first day of mother's last normal menstrual period (LMP) and the date of birth. If LMP is less than 17 completed weeks, greater than 47 completed weeks, not stated, or implausible with birth weight, then the obstetric estimate of completed weeks gestation is used. Gestational age based on LMP and obstetric estimate are comparable with data based on LMP and obstetric estimate only. More...

Footnotes: Updated July 2010.

Note: Maps use the natural break classification method, which reflects patterns in the data by dividing the map into naturally occurring groups. Using statistical tools, this method determines cut-off points for each group by identifying large gaps in data values.
