Beginning in 2009, data represent tax returns filed between January and June of the tax year

Data Source: The Brookings Institution, EITC interactive:  http://www.brookings.edu/research/interactives/eitc

Footnotes: 2007 data.   Methodology: Internal Revenue Service zip code level data (tax year 2007) were aggregated to the city/town level.

2005 data. Internal Revenue Services (IRS) Zip-Code Level Data, 2005 were aggregated to City/Town Level using ArcGIS (Geographic Information System mapping software) in combination with Excel.

2001 data. The methods used for 2001 calculations have resulted in a few instances where the estimated number of EITC eligible non-participants in a given town is zero, yet a dollar amount has been estimated for a total unclaimed EITC in that town.

Note: Maps use the natural break classification method, which reflects patterns in the data by dividing the map into naturally occurring groups. Using statistical tools, this method determines cut-off points for each group by identifying large gaps in data values.
