Definitions:

Children in kinship care is derived from the relationship to householder items on the Current Population Survey Annual Social and Economic Supplement.  Children are consider to be in kinship care when all of the following conditions are true: a parent is not present in the household; the child is not a foster child to the householder; the child is not a housemate/ roommate / border with no relatives in the household; the child is not a householder; and the child is not a spouse or unmarried partner of the householder.  The analysis excludes group quarters population.

Note: The District of Columbia, Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands are not included in maps and rankings because they are not states and therefore comparisons on many indicators of child well being are not meaningful.
