Puerto Rico N.C.
Virgin Islands N.C.

Definitions: Births to women not born in the U.S.

Data Source: Child Trends analysis of 1990-2006 Natality MicroData files from Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, National Center for Health Statistics.

Footnotes: Updated October 2009
Puerto Rico and the Virgin Islands are not included in the U.S. Average. Foreign-born in Puerto Rico and the Virgin Islands are defined as born outside the 50 states and the District of Columbia.  2006 mother’s nativity data for Puerto Rico and the Virgin Islands are “N.C.=Not Comparable” because it does not distinguish mothers born in in each respective territory versus in the 50 states and DC, as was defined in previous years.

Note: The District of Columbia, Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands are not included in maps and rankings because they are not states and therefore comparisons on many indicators of child well being are not meaningful.
