How do I find the data source for a specific indicator?
The data source will appear at the bottom of any report you create. If you are on a State or National Profile page you will have to select
Show under
Notes/Sources (see below). Once this is done, sources used and notes pertaining to your chosen indicator will appear.
I just tried to access data in the Data by State section and got this message: “No Data: No data were found for your request. Please try setting different parameters and try again.” Does this mean that no data are available?
In some instances it means that no data are available. But in other instances data are available for a different set of indicators. When you pick an indicator the page defaults to the Featured Indicators (see below). Refine your search by clicking on another option provided under
Indicators. Make sure to try
State Indicators,
National Indicators, or other options, as data may be available for the specified geography.
How do I share data on social networking sites, blogs, and other online venues?
The steps are the same for sharing maps and graphs. First, select an indicator. A report will be created for this indicator. You will have to select the
Map or
Line Graph tab depending on what you are interested in creating and sharing. Once you have created your map or graph, select
Share. You will be provided with dozens of options for places to share data (e.g., Facebook, Blogger, or Twitter). Once you determine where you want to share, you will be asked to log onto your account to post the data onto your page.
I want to upload a map or graph onto my website. How do I go about doing that?
The steps are the same for uploading maps and graphs. First select an indicator of interest. A report will be created for this indicator. You will have to select the
Map or
Line Graph tab depending on what you are interested in creating and sharing. Once you have created your final product select
Add Image to Your Site. You will be provided with instructions and a piece of HTML code to post on your website.
How do I access the national KIDS COUNT Data Book data through my smartphone?
You can access data available in the KIDS COUNT Data Book by going to mobile.kidscount.org.
What data is available through the Data Book mobile site?
Currently, data for the 10 key indicators presented in the KIDS COUNT Data Book are available through the Data Center mobile site. Please stay tuned in the future as we look to expand the number of indicators available both at the national, state, and community level.
How do I rank states, counties, school districts, and states?
Once you select an indicator of interest (e.g. child poverty), select the
123 Ranking tab. Go to
Sort order/by and select
Numerical by Value from the dropdown menu provided. A ranked chart will appear.
How can I determine how my state ranks in comparison to other states?
The KIDS COUNT Rank provides you with insight into how your state ranks among other states based on 10 key indicators. These data can be accessed by selecting
Data Across States, going to
ther IndicatorsO, and selecting
KIDS COUNT overall rank. Finally, pick
Numerical by Value from the dropdown menu under Sort order/by found toward the top of the page. (See two images below.)
Where are my state’s CLIKS data?
The data formerly contained in the CLIKS (Community Level Information on Kids) site are currently housed in the KIDS COUNT Data Center. For the most part, the CLIKS data are all contained in the “Data By State” section of the site.
How do I cite KIDS COUNT data?
Permission to copy, reprint, or otherwise distribute KIDS COUNT data is granted as long as appropriate acknowledgement is given. When citing data from the website, please include our URL:
datacenter.kidscount.org. For example: The Annie E. Casey Foundation, KIDS COUNT Data Center,
datacenter.kidscount.org.
