The KIDS COUNT Overall Rank shows how states rank, based on the 10 KIDS COUNT indicators. The state that ranks highest (best) is New Hampshire, Minnesota ranks second, and Vermont third. Data from the 2010 KIDS COUNT Data Book shows that overall improvements in child well-being that began in the late 1990s stalled in the years just before the current economic downturn. Since 2000, of the 10 key child well-being indicators tracked in the Data Book, five of the 10 key indicators improved, three indicators worsened and two were not comparable. Data from the 2010 KIDS COUNT Special Report have been updated in Data Across States. Data includes estimates from the 2009 National Assessment of Educational Progress and the 2007 National Survey of Children's Health.
